Located in Central Austin, Hyde Park is situated just north of The University of Texas and borders the neighborhoods of Hancock and North Loop. The neighborhood traces its origins back to 1891 and is considered to be Austin’s first suburb. Hyde Park was originally marketed as an affluent suburb featuring large, majestic residences.
Hyde Park is a quintessentially Austin neighborhood. It maintains a small-town atmosphere while offering easy access to hip cafes and restaurants, trendy shopping spots and markets. Residents in the community can be seen as health-conscious and eco-friendly. There’s also a large student population here due to the close proximity to campus. Most of the student population are upperclassmen. You can also find young families and singles in the neighborhood, proving that the eclectic community has something for everyone.
At winter time, the area comes alive with Christmas lights on the houses. The festive display draws crowds from all around the Austin area. It’s a community that prides itself on holiday cheer and neighborly participation. When warmer weather comes around, the community comes alive with people and dogs enjoying the tree-lined streets and terrific parks.
Residents commonly walk and run through the neighborhood, often with dogs. Shipe Park, right in the heart of Hyde Park, is a popular hangout for dog-loving locals. It has a small swimming pool, playground, basketball court, and large, open grassy areas. Hancock Golf Course, a public nine-hole golf course, occupies one edge of Hyde Park. It was created in 1899, making it Texas’ oldest golf course. A museum dedicated to the life and work of famed sculptor Elisabet Ney resides in the community as well. With so many amenities and attractions, Hyde Park maintains a unique aspect of being able to provide a variety of activities for people of all interests.
The community is served by the Austin Independent School District. Residents are assigned to Lee Elementary School, Kealing Middle School, and McCallum High School. The area is also served by Hyde Park Baptist High School.
